About CIS Tax
If you are new to CIS tax and CIS refunds, you might feel it’s all a bit daunting. Here is some information about CIS tax that you might find helpful:
What is CIS
CIS tax is a special scheme for the construction industry. Under the CIS scheme, contractors make tax deductions from their subcontractors which are then paid to HMRC. These CIS tax deductions count as a payment on account towards your tax and NI.
What is the CIS
The normal rate at which CIS tax is deducted is 20%. If you’re a CIS subcontractor there is a very good chance you have overpaid tax and you should file a return to recover it. If you do not register for the CIS scheme, the deduction rate goes up to 30%.
How do I get my
All self-employed people, including CIS workers, must complete a tax return each year. The tax year ends on 5th April and your tax return must be filed by 31st January the following year. Filing a tax return is how you obtain your CIS refund. We can do it for you.
What expenses can I
You can claim tax relief for a number of work-related expenses. These include travel, meals, accomodation, parking, tolls, tools, protective clothing, public liability insurance, phone bills, postage and stationery.
How do I claim for my
Your travel expenses must be calculated in accordance with HMRC's rules and a claim for them included on your annual tax return. Your tax return enables you to get back overpaid CIS tax and tax relief on your expenses all in one go.
